There are various levels of photography in which I work. I may create images with the purpose of just having a visual record of that event or moment. I may be looking for that precise moment when people share culture, or I may be making a portrait of someone. In any expression of creativity, it depends on the motivation and purpose.

Osage Roadman

Preston Merrill, Osage elder, relaxes after "running" a peyote meeting. He is one of the few Osage fullbloods who still remembers the old people. "This is the way I have seen them do it," he will often say.
Hominy, OK 1995

I learned early to photograph what was close to my heart, so a lot of what I photograph involves my family, relatives and friends. It's important to have a photographic memoir of people I know and the events of the day.

Peyote Gardens Meeting

Native American Church Meeting during the members annual pilgrimage to the Peyote Gardens.

Miranda City, Texas 1997

A lot of people I have photographed have passed on to the spirit world. I am thankful to be able to have a record of their legacy and I want my children to see and hear stories about their accomplishments and be inspired as I was.
