Before it is time for the services to start, the head deacon appoints one of the other deacons to blow the conch shell, a call to worship. It is used for two calls, and at each call it is blown four times. The first call is for everyone to prepare for the service, the second call is for the starting of the service. When it is blown the members stop whatever they are doing and bow their heads in prayer. A few churches still use a conch shell, most will use a cow horn.
