A Creek Church Photo Documentary Project

Project update An premier exhibition of work opened on April of 2008, at the Creek Council House Museum in Okmulgee. Currently the exhibition is at the McCombs Gallery, Bacone College.

About The Project
The goals of the project are to document the Muscogee Creek churches and the unique Christian culture of the Muscogee people. Our medium will be photography, video, and narrative.

The project began in October of 2002, and will run through December 2008. The research and fieldwork will be within the lands of the Oklahoma Creek people and will include several denominations.

Our early focus will be with the older traditional churches and their events and rites, the families and communities, the elders, the key leaders, hymns and song, food and feast, and the youth of today.

When the fieldwork is completed an educational museum exhibit will be developed that will serve as a record of who we are, and where we have been. Our title will be "Mekusapvlke." a praying people.

I am presently working with the Creek Council House Museum staff, who will curate the opening exhibition of the work, and will then offer it as a traveling exhibition to other museums and organizations.

This project is coodinated by Tom Fields, a Creek, photographer and video producer. Independent artist who believes in the educational and historical importance of this work.

Artist Statement
As and independent artist the work is a personal expressions of my art. I do not work for any one group or organization, but believe that the body of work will serve as a testament for all Muscogee people for years to come.

Advisors
An advisory group of Creek people, who are deeply knowledgeable of the subject,
will guide the project and assist in selecting the final body of work for the exhibition. They will also make recommendations for further use of the information gathered.

Funding
As an independent artist the funding will be from grants and donations. We are in the process of seeking funding for research, fieldwork, and exhibition and project development.

The "Mekusapvlke" project is a non-profit effort, however like any project of quality, cost will be incurred.
